Tooth Decay Prevention

Tooth decay is a progressive disease that results from the interaction of the mouth’s bacteria and sugars. Sugar creates a reaction in the bacteria, which causes it to produce acids that break down the tooth enamel and form cavities. Your Oviedo family dentist can help by removing this decay and filling the tooth, restoring it to a healthy state. If tooth decay progresses, it can cause nerve damage to the tooth and may require a crown. To avoid tooth decay, we recommend:

  • Brushing twice per day
  • Flossing daily
  • Getting enough fluoride
  • Managing your diet
  • Visiting your family dentist for check-ups

Fluoride

Fluoride is a substance that helps teeth become stronger and more resistant to decay. Fluoride can be found in toothpaste, some dental flosses, and even most sources of public drinking water. Your Oviedo family dentist will be able to evaluate the level of fluoride that’s in the drinking water source and if necessary, can also recommend fluoride supplements.

Sealants

One of the most likely places to develop cavities is on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. These surfaces contain grooves that can easily trap food particles and bacteria. When bacteria react with the food, acids will form and break down the tooth enamel. Sealants help protect these areas by sealing the grooves. The sealant material is a resin that’s applied to these chewing surfaces to smooth them out, preventing bacteria and food particles from becoming trapped. Sealants will last for several years, though they’ll need to be regularly checked during appointments.

Thumb Sucking

For babies and toddlers, thumb sucking is a natural reflex that will comfort and relax them. Often, children will stop sucking their thumbs when the permanent front teeth are ready to erupt. However, if a child keeps thumb sucking after he or she is about four years of age, it can cause improper growth of the mouth and the misalignment of teeth. It’s best to try to curb this habit; to do so, here are a few tips that your Oviedo family dentist recommends:

  • Praise your child when he or she stops thumb sucking. Remember to keep it positive; don’t reprimand your child for thumb sucking.
  • If you notice that there’s a trigger (usually some anxiety) that causes the thumb sucking, try to eliminate it. Thumb sucking is typically used to help children cope with stress.
  • You can try to deter your child from thumb sucking by placing a sock on his or her hand or a bandage on the thumb.
