This is highly beneficial for our patients because we can provide virtually any kind of dental service without having to refer you to other specialists. Keeping your total dental care within one practice and saving you plenty of time. Just a sample of some of the many types of general treatment that we can provide for our patients includes the following.

Fillings

At our practice, we offer both composite and silver amalgam fillings. Both of these materials have been extensively studied and have been found to be durable and completely safe. Our composite fillings are tooth-colored and chemically bonded to the tooth surface. While the fees for these fillings are higher because they take longer to place and have a higher material cost, they also provide the most natural look. Please feel free to ask your Oviedo general dentist about which one is best for you.

Routine Teeth Cleanings

Twice a year, you should schedule a routine dental cleaning. During this visit, one of our dental hygienists will remove plaque from your teeth, especially from places where your brush can't reach, such as underneath the gum line and between teeth. We will then clean your teeth and apply fluoride to help protect your teeth once you leave the office.

Tooth Extractions

A tooth extraction is the complete removal of a tooth – a task which may be necessary if:

  • A primary tooth is preventing the eruption of a permanent tooth.
  • A tooth has suffered extensive decay or damage, and it can’t be repaired.
  • The patient has an advanced case of gum disease.
  • A tooth is impacted (which typically occurs to wisdom teeth).

Depending on the complexity of the case, a tooth extraction can either be performed surgically or non-surgically. A mild anesthesia will be used to ensure that a patient is as comfortable as possible during the process.

Wisdom Teeth

The third molars, which are commonly known as wisdom teeth, will usually appear when a person is in their late teens or early twenties. Wisdom teeth typically don’t have the proper space available in the jaw to erupt appropriately (which is known as impaction), which can cause problems, such as crowding and damage to the adjacent teeth.

To prevent these problems, the wisdom teeth will likely need to be extracted. At our Oviedo office, we have the equipment and training that are required to perform a tooth extraction in a completely safe manner with a minimum level of discomfort. Ask our staff if you’d like more information about our tooth extraction procedure if you feel that it’s in your best interests.

Early Dental Care

Teething

While a child’s teeth will start to form before birth, they won’t typically emerge until he or she is somewhere between six-to-12 months of age. The first primary (or baby) teeth that will erupt are usually the lower central incisors, followed by the upper central incisors. The rest of the 20 primary teeth will usually finish erupting by the age of three, though their order can vary. During this process, your baby’s gums will be sore and tender, often making your child irritable. To help ease this teething pain, we suggest rubbing your child’s sore gums with:

  • A clean finger
  • A cool teething ring
  • A cold, wet cloth
  • The back of a cold spoon

Also, when your baby is teething, we recommend monitoring for signs of baby bottle decay, which can occur when anything other than water (such as a bottle full of milk) is left in an infant’s mouth while sleeping. Because of the sugary liquids pooling around your baby’s teeth as he or she sleeps, tooth decay can develop. Check your baby’s teeth – especially on the inside of the mouth every two weeks to look for dull spots or lines that are whiter than the tooth’s surface.

A Child’s First Dental Visit

The American Dental Association recommends that a child’s first dental visit should be scheduled at around the time of his or her first birthday. Having your child visit his or her Oviedo general dentist is important at this time because it will:

  • Allow the general dentist to check for any dental problems and treat them before they might cause more damage.
  • Give a child an opportunity to become acclimated and comfortable with the general dentist and staff, allowing him or her to become more at ease during future visits.
  • Be a great way to teach both children and parents about better oral hygiene techniques.

Why Primary Teeth Are Important

Even though primary teeth will naturally fall out, they provide many important benefits that include the following:

  • Primary teeth will guide the eruption of permanent teeth and make sure that they emerge in their appropriate spots.
  • They allow a child to maintain clear speech and pronunciation.
  • Healthy and strong primary teeth will allow a child to chew food properly and maintain good nutrition.
  • Healthy teeth can also give a child a much-improved self-image.

If a child loses any primary teeth early, a space maintainer will likely be needed. A space maintainer is a device that holds the space of the missing tooth open so that none of the surrounding teeth shift toward the space and cause the permanent teeth to come in crooked. If you believe that your child has lost a primary tooth early, please make sure to let your Oviedo general dentist know as soon as possible.
